Meet Simi Awujo: The 22-Year-Old Football Star Balancing Coding, Culture & the Global Stage

At just 22, Simi Awujo is already living a story that feels far bigger than her years. Still, in many ways, she is only just getting started.

Born in Atlanta on September 23, 2003, to Nigerian parents from Lagos and Idanre, Simi’s journey reflects a blend of cultures and experiences. She was raised in Canada, where she developed both academically and athletically.

At the University of Southern California, she studied computer science and business while competing at the highest level of collegiate football. That balance between intellect and sport continues to define her path.

Today, she plays as a midfielder for Manchester United Women in the Women’s Super League. Her rise reflects years of discipline, focus, and steady growth.

And importantly, the world is beginning to take notice.

So, who exactly is Simi Awujo?

The answer is layered.

She is proudly Nigerian by heritage and Canadian by international allegiance. At the same time, she describes herself as a “nerd” who genuinely enjoys coding. This rare combination sets her apart.

Beyond that, she remains deeply connected to her roots. She speaks Yoruba, enjoys meals like ogbono soup, and carries the values of her upbringing with her.

“Yes, I’ve been various places and I am still quite young, but I do think that it’s important for me to honour my parents and honour the way that I grew up and carry that part of me into every environment so that I can show up as authentically as I can,” she says.

In many ways, that authenticity is what makes her stand out the most.

Her journey into football started early. Growing up in a football-loving home, she was influenced by her father’s passion for the game. However, her older brother, Jide, played an even bigger role.

“Football has been a part of my life pretty much since the beginning,” she explains. “My dad loved the game and included us in that. But my brother played a huge role because he was older than me. I always wanted to be as good as him and to compete with him.”

As a result, she trained with him and his teams, pushing herself to improve. Those early experiences helped shape the player she is today.

Off the pitch, Simi’s personality shines just as brightly.

She enjoys Afrobeats and often listens to artists like Joeboy and Mohbad.

“Yes, I do love Afrobeats music. Right now, I feel like I’m listening to a lot of Fola, but I do really love the song ‘Adunni’ by Rybeena and Joeboy. I also love ‘Duro’ by Kodee and ‘Peace’ by Mohbad,” she shares.

In addition, her love for coding remains an important part of her identity.

“Yes, I do love coding, but I have taken a bit of a break for the past few months since I graduated. Hopefully in the future, I’ll be able to build something that integrates the things that I love — football and coding — and when that time comes, I’ll let you know,” she adds.

Looking ahead, signing for Manchester United Women marks a significant milestone. It is a full-circle moment that reflects both her growth as a footballer and her evolution as a person.

Ultimately, Simi Awujo represents a new generation of athletes — multifaceted, globally rooted, and confidently authentic.

And clearly, this is only the beginning.
