The recognition adds to a career that has spanned Ghanaian television, film and entertainment for several decades. According to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Omaboe’s rise to prominence on television was closely linked to the Akan drama group that later became known as Obra. Initially christened Keteke, the group featured several performers who would become familiar faces on Ghanaian television, with Omaboe emerging as one of its leading performers. It was during those early drama years that she acquired the name Maame Dokono. GBC reports that the name came from a role she played as a kenkey seller, with “Dokono” referring to the traditional Ghanaian food.

Her career later expanded beyond drama. She became widely associated with By the Fireside, the Ghana Television programme in which she told Ananse folklore to children in a fireside storytelling setting. The programme became one of the notable parts of her television legacy and connected her work in entertainment with Ghanaian storytelling traditions.
The latest honour comes at a gala centred on the legacy of Nigerian screen legend Pete Edochie. The Pete Edochie Legacy Project was launched in Ghana to celebrate his contribution to African cinema, culture and storytelling.
For Omaboe, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognises a career that has moved across television drama, film, music and presenting, while making her one of the recognisable figures in Ghana’s entertainment history.
The honour also places her among veteran African entertainers whose work has remained part of the cultural memory of audiences across generations.
